Niko Mercer Street NYC

I asked the concierge to give me a list of new trendy places with good cuisine.... Yes I have to admitt that it's quite a difficult equation to solve.

anyway... on the list there was all those super trendy spot in Meatpacking : tenjune, villa pacri, budakhan...

and I saw Niko in SoHo, here is the descriprtion: Trendsters are buzzing about this slick SoHo newcomer whose modern japanese menu is overseen by 2 chefs Hiro Sawatari (ex Sushi Yasuda) does the raw items and josh DeChellis ( la Fonda del sol) the cooked.

design is.... no design... let's talk about food directelly...

I ordered A diet coke and as Niko is supposed to be a trendy place ( by the way for lunch it's not... it's almost empty) the bring me this stupid soda that all trendy places tend to use Boylan diet soda.... it's terrible... beuuurk

I ordered a Fluke ceviche at 16$.... portion is just so stupid regarding the price.... what about taste? nothing special.... it's not a ceviche.... but a kind of carpaccio or how they like to say on new trend japanese restaurant new style sashimi!!!!

I then ordered some suchi and a roll of california maki. the maki normal. the sushi I have to admitt that are good, fresh fish, super rice at good temparature....from left it's toro (fatty tuna) kendai tuna, hamachi, kanpachi, salmon.... i've asked for ivory alaskan salmon but they were out of stock

to finish I asked for the signature hot dish? to try something from the second chef.... tokyo spicy crispy chicken...presentation of the dish is poor... the first piece you are like ok it's spicy and crispy... then you go like it's super fatty... and then you are like searching for the nano piece of chicken on the huge tempura cover!!!

to conclude.... tokyo chicken not good

Niko is expensive, the only good thing are sushis and they are as expensive as in sushi Yasuda that is super... location, design, quality, choice...

one thing is really good at Niko, the service... a young gentlemen very polite and taking care and attention....

that's it.

i don't recommand Niko. many, many other good japanese in NYC.
